Naked wedding cakes are one of the hottest trends of 2018, and brides-to-be are falling in love with vintage, rustic feel. There’s no denying that they’re completely gorgeous, look delicious, and are a tempting prospect if you’re planning to get married soon and you really want to wow your guests with something that’s a little less traditional.
But what do you need to know before you go ahead and start seeking out suppliers of naked wedding cakes? We’ve done the research so you don’t have to, and so you can make an informed decision about whether it’s right for you. Here’s what you need to know…
SO WHAT ARE NAKED WEDDING CAKES?
Naked wedding cakes are sponge cakes stacked on top of each other, and they’re usually at least three tiers deep. They’re usually filled with buttercream and sometimes jam, and what makes them distinctive is the lack of icing. The sponge cake is exposed, and they’re often decorated with sugar flowers or fresh fruits.
They’re still hugely popular in 2018, but the trend first started around 5-6 years ago. Since then, they’ve appeared regularly at fairs, in magazines, and on bridal blogs.
WHAT ARE THE DOWNSIDES OF NAKED WEDDING CAKES?
It’s important to know that in caking making circles, naked wedding cakes are the cause of much debate. Yes, they look great. That’s precisely why they’re so popular with brides. But they certainly do have their disadvantages, too.
First of all, because the sponge cake is exposed to the air, they’re prone to drying out really quite quickly. In fact, this is the main reasons why some cake designers are refusing to take orders for these kinds of cakes. Ultimately, a cake that isn’t top notch reflects badly on the reputation that they’ve spent years building up.
Another downside is that the cake needs to be assembled at the venue. This can be quite stressful for the designers as they’ll need to bring along all their tools and equipment, and often they’ll be being watched by the venue staff. It’s a lot of pressure, and of course, this needs to take place before your wedding kicks off and all your guests arrive. So in practical terms, it could be eight to ten hours between the cake being assembled, and your guests tucking into their slice. That’s plenty of time for the quality to deteriorate.
In fact, Country Living magazine published a scathing article that outlined all the reasons why brides need to stop serving these cakes at their weddings. Ouch!
Before going ahead and making your decision, you need to seriously consider these factors and ask yourself whether you’re willing to take the risk.
WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE?
Wedding cake trends are ever evolving, and naked wedding cakes definitely aren’t the only novel idea out there.
You could create a doughnut tower. You could serve elaborately decorated cupcakes. If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, you might want to espouse tradition altogether and have a savoury cheese cake, served alongside crackers and chutney.
